Indian SC bans political ads on cable, TV

Supreme Court yesterday banned all political advertisements on cable and TV channels, which do not conform with to the laws of the land and offend morality, decency and religious susceptibility of the viewers.

Substituting the Andhra Pradesh High Court order allowing political advertisements on television, a three judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice VN Khare, said all those advertisements which are also "shocking, disgusting and revolting" to the public could not be shown by the television channels and cable networks.

The court asked Election Commission to monitor the advertisements.

The court asked the Election Commission to respond as to why the expenses incurred for advertisements by candidates for the election be not added to their election expenses.

On this issue, the court deferred the hearing till Monday.
