Lata Mangeshkar lends her voice to Vajpayee's verse
Pallab Bhattacharya, New Delhi
It was a new chapter in the life of 75-year-old melody queen Lata Mangeshkar. The nightingale of Indian music, whose voice has mesmerised generations for over half a century, has finally found an opportunity to sing the poems written by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Lata flew down to the Indian capital from Bombay to present the compact disc and cassette of the eight poems of Vajpayee to which she has lent her voice. The music album Anatarnaad is produced by a company owned by the singer's brother Adinath Mangeshkar. According to the singer, Vajpayee's poems which she has rendered into song reflect several aspects of his personality. The Prime Minister returned the compliment by telling Lata that 'You sing and my songs become immortal.' Lata then delighted the audience by singing Vajpayee's verse Geet naya gata hoon (I sing a new song). Lata's brother is hopeful that the combination of his sister's voice and the Prime Minister's poems will make the album a hit with the masses.
