Champs Trophy stays put

The Champions Trophy tournament will not be moved from England, International Cricket Council (ICC) president Ehsan Mani said in Johannesburg on Wednesday.England's reluctance to tour Zimbabwe in November had led to speculation that other ICC members would seek to have the September one-day tournament switched. "There's no truth in that whatsoever, the tournament is not going to be moved," Mani told reporters. "If England do not tour Zimbabwe we have processes in place to deal with that situation. They are two separate issues, one has nothing to do with the other." England forfeited their match against Zimbabwe during last year's World Cup, citing security concerns although some players mentioned moral reservations following alleged human rights abuses in the country. England were duly fined for not fulfilling the fixture. Under ICC rules, teams can only make a case for not touring because of genuine safety concerns or following direct demands from their government. ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said: "We are going to Harare, and once we have been there and discussed the matter with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) we will know more. "England has maintained that this is a safety and security issue, and that is the only aspect that we will discuss. "The best thing would be to play cricket and reach out to the people. No moral issues come into it whatsoever." England would face a minimum two-million-dollar fine and risk suspension from international cricket if they pull out of the tour for reasons that do not meet with ICC approval. The British Government has been highly critical of President Robert Mugabe's administration in Zimbabwe, accusing him of suppressing political opposition, but has stopped short of banning the England team from touring the country.
