Nor'wester hits Barisal, Netrakona

At least 25 people were injured and 500 houses damaged as nor'wester lashed Barisal and Netrakona districts yesterday and on Wednesday night.Our Barisal Correspondent reported that season's first nor'wester hit four unions in Bakerganj upazila of the district yesterday morning, leaving over 300 houses damaged. The affected unions are Dudhal, Darial, Bharpasha and Charamaddi. According to local met Office, the storm started lashing the unions at about 11:00am at a speed of about 65-km per hour and lasted for 20 minutes. Shops at bazaars in the four unions were also damaged and a large number of trees were uprooted in the storm. Local MP Abul Hossain yesterday visited the unions and directed the upazila nirbahi officer to prepare a list of the affected people According to our Netrakona correspondent, nor'wester swept three villages in Kendua upazila Wednesday night, damaging at least 200 houses and injuring 25 people. District administration sources said the storm, at a speed of 90-km to 100-km per hour, hit the villages at about 8'00pm and continued for 25 minutes. A large number of trees and electric poles were uprooted and standing Boro crops were damaged in the storm.
