Padma Bridge
Passengers suffer for 10 hours for blockade

Demonstrators yesterday blocked the highway from Daulatdia ferry terminal to Goalanda crossing in Rajbari for 10 hours, demanding the construction of the Padma bridge at Daulatdia-Paturia point.

Over 1,000 demonstrators with trees, dredging pipes and burning tyres took part in the programme, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road, causing sufferings to passengers.

The leaders of the Andolan began the blockade at 6:00am as part of their indefinite strike called on March 15 from a rally attended by seven lawmakers, including Chief Whip Khandakar Delwar Hossain.

On receiving assurance from lawmaker Ali Newaj Mahmud Khaiyam of Rajbari constituency that the bridge would be built at Daulatdia-Paturia point before the bridge at Mawa, the demonstrators withdrew the programme at 4:00pm.

Sources said the lawmaker claimed he talked to the prime minister and got her pledge to this end.
