10 killed, 62 hurt in road crashes

Ten people were killed and 62 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka and Pabna districts yesterday.Of them, eight people were killed in Dhamrai of Dhaka while the rest in Pabna. Our Manikganj Correspondent reported that a road accident on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Bathuli in Dhamrai upazila yesterday left eight people killed and 50 others injured. According to Police and witnesses, the accident occurred at about 2:00pm when a Paturia bound passenger bus plunged from Bathuli bridge breaking its railing after the front left wheel of the vehicle burst. Five of the dead are Nasir Sheikh, 50, of Sreepur upazila in Magura, Shukur Ali, 30, of Pangsa upazila in Rajbari, Shankar Pal, 50, of village Kayetpara under Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka, Mostofa, 45, of village Demukha under Ghior upazila of Manikganj and Raju, 30, of Manikgnj. Identity of the rest three could not be known. Shankar Pal and an unidentified man died on the spot and six others at Manikganj Sadar Hospital. The injured passengers were admitted to Manikganj Sadar Hospital. Of them, 15 were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. In Pabna, two people were killed and 12 others injured in two road accidents on the Pabna-Ishwardi Highway yesterday morning. According to our correspondent, A Ishwardi bound minibus from Pabna overturned at Islamgathi at about 8:00am, killing one of its passengers, Belaluddin, 30, on the spot and injuring 12 others. Five of the injured were admitted to Pabna General Hospital and seven others given first aid. On the same road at Neptune, one Ariful Islam, 22, died when a minibus hit him from behind at about 9:30am. Soon after the accident, locals put up a barricade on the highway, disrupting traffic for two hours. Police seized both the vehicles, but the drivers managed to flee.
