Bangladesh Design Council formed to provide access to niche markets

The top designers of Bangladesh have joined hands to promote the Bangladesh Design Council. The organisation will focus on indigenous fashion designers' technology and trade along with back up trades in accessories, jewelry, leatherwear, knitwear, publications, set designers, costume designers, models, choreographers, and related industries.

According to several designers, the aim of the Council is to provide assistance to newcomers so that they can gain access to niche markets and promote their products both nationally and internationally. In the words of one of the founding directors of the Council Nasrine R Choudhury: 'Our main objective is to expose the vast potential of the design sector of Bangladesh. We want to promote the productions of Bangladesh to create a worldwide market.' She adds,' From my experience I have seen that Bangladeshi goods face difficulties in the international market. This is partly due to mismanagement and partly because of our lack of the necessary skills. We the senior activists wish to share our experience with the new generation through seminars, symposiums and fashion shows internationally to expand our markets.' Nasrine's ambition is to launch a fashion institute in Bangladesh soon.

A fashion show in May in Dhaka is a major step to promote 'made in Bangladesh' brands of garments, knitwear and leatherwear.
