Rome derby to be replayed

The Rome derby abandoned earlier this month due to fears for crowd safety after a riot broke out outside the stadium, will be replayed, the Italian sports judiciary said on Tuesday. The date for the rematch is yet to be decided, but it is expected to take place in late April. Roma were given a one-match stadium ban for their fans' part in the trouble and fined 3,000 euros (3,660 dollars), while Lazio, the home team on March 21 at their shared Olympic stadium, were fined 51,000 euro (62,000 dollars). The original match was brought to a halt at the start of the second-half when a rumour, which turned out to be false, went round the stadium that a young Roma fan had been knocked over and killed by a police van. Despite an annoucement by Rome's chief of police that the story was unfounded, scores of Roma fans continued to fight running battles with police, leaving 150 officers injured. Several members of Roma's ultras (hard-core fans) then ran on to the pitch and told the club's captain Francesco Totti to try and get the match suspended to avoid trouble breaking out inside the stadium. It is believed Roma received the heavier punishment because of the club's failure to control those fans from coming on to the field. The game was eventually called off on the orders of Italian Football League president Adriano Galliani, who feared for the safety of the 70,000 spectators inside the ground.
