UEFA Euro 2004 Portugal
Maldini will be welcomed

AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta said Tuesday the Italian national team would warmly welcome the return of club team-mate Paolo Maldini to international football.

Maldini retired from the international scene after the 2002 World Cup finals to concentrate on club football.

But he could be in line for a recall from Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni, who has made no secret of the fact he would like to see the 35-year-old return for this summer's European championships in Portugal.

"Paolo knows very well that it would be a pleasure for everyone to see him come back and it would be important for us," said Nesta, who was not called up for Wednesday's friendly away to Portugal as he is recovering from injury.

"However, it is up to him and nobody can make up his mind for him."

Maldini has been an inspirational figure for Milan as they look to win the league for the first time since 1999 and retain their Champions League trophy.

Carlo Ancelotti's men currently hold a nine point lead over second-placed Juventus with seven Serie A games left, and they are well placed to book a place in the last four of the Champions League after defeating Deportivo La Coruna 4-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final last week.

Maldini is Italy's most capped player, having represented the Azzurri 126 times.

The Italians have been drawn to face Sweden, Denmark and Bulgaria in Group C at Euro 2004 which runs from June 12 to July 4.

The Azzurri's first match is against Denmark on June 14.
