US arms experts in Chittagong

A three-member US weapons experts team reached the port city yesterday to see the sophisticated firearms seized recently from different parts of Chittagong.

The team called at the office of Mahbubur Rahman, superintendent of police, Chittagong, in the afternoon and inspected recently recovered M-79, M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles and huge ammunition kept there, police sources said.

The US team is likely to visit Cox's Bazar and other places in Chittagong region, sources said.

Paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles and army personnel seized the arms from bordering districts of Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachhari and Rangamati.

The weapons experts team is visiting Chittagong apparently to get information on arms smugglers, who are dodging arrest, and their routes for smuggling the advanced firearms into Bangladesh, sources said.
