Opposition Whip Faruq Khan yesterday dismissed as false an army allegation of cantonment rules breach against Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and 25 others. The retired lieutenant colonel, a co-accused in the case Dhaka Cantonment Board filed on Sunday charging the 26 of the main opposition party and its front organisations with violating the cantonment act, also rejected as untrue a statement of Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, who represents the defence ministry in parliament. Hafiz told the House on Sunday Hasina led a procession and tried to provoke army personnel Saturday night on her way to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) where prominent writer Humayun Azad is being treated for critical head and jaw wounds. AL's counter-statement came at a press briefing at the Sangsad Bhaban, also attended by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Abdul Hamid and Opposition Chief Whip Abdus Shahid who demanded immediate dissolution of parliament and snap polls. With her flagged vehicle barred from the cantonment, Hasina had to walk four kilometres to the CMH where the gate was slammed on her face, Faruq told newspersons, adding she did not violate any rules. A day after Hasina and her party leaders were stopped from visiting Azad, critically wounded in a Friday night machete attack allegedly by hit men with ties to fundamentalists, the cantonment board accused them of breaching the army regulation and the Official Secrets Act 1923 as well. On confiscation of films and tapes of photojournalists and television crews, Faruq said none of the journalists took photographs of any military establishment and they covered only the usual activities of opposition leaders. Hamid said if Hasina's entry to the cantonment was a legal breach, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, being a political party chief, should not reside inside the cantonment. He also criticised Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar for giving rulings on the issues beyond his jurisdiction. AL leaders Rahmat Ali and Obaidul Kader, Jubo League Chairman Jahangir Kabir Nanok and Jubo League General Secretary Mirza Azam, also a lawmaker, also figure on the list of the accused. Major Abdullah Al Mamun, executive officer of the cantonment board, filed the case with the Cantonment Police Station. In the first information report, the complainant says the cantonment is restricted area and permission is required for entry. The report says Hasina entered the cantonment with her deputies without permission and despite army request not to proceed.
