The weeklong Street Theatre Festival (patha-natok) arranged by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) came to an end on February 26. Since 1985, the theatrical organisation has been arranging such festivals to commemorate the Language Martyrs simultaneously, at the two venues- Shaheed Minar premises and at the Amphitheatre.Mamunur Rashid, the President of BGTF, chaired the programme at the Central Shaheed Minar, while Liakat Ali Lucky, the General Secretary of the organisation delivered speech at the Amphitheatre. At the afternoon programme the eminent cultural leaders of the country Ramendu Majumdar, Mamunur Rashid, Ataur Rahman, Nasiruddin Yousuff and others delivered speeches at the Shaheed Minar. In the presence of thousands of audience the speakers condemned the brutal attack on the renowned intellectual Dr. Humayun Azad. 'We are passing through a crucial time. Evil has risen and insecurity is rampant,' said the cultural activists. Several theatrical groups from outside the city took part in the street theatre after the speech. Thousands of the spectators at the Amphitheatre supported Liakat Ali Lucky's speech against the attack on Dr. Humaun Azad. Popular groups of the country like Dhaka Podatik and Loko Natyadal staged street theatre later on. Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation usually arranges street theatre from February 1, simultaneously at the two venues. This year the programme was delayed due to Eid. The arrangement was however a success.
