Attack on leader's house
JP blames ruling party

Nilphamari Jatiya Party held a rally on its office premises Saturday evening protesting Friday night's attack on the houses of its central Joint Secretary General Joynal Abed in in town, allegedly by Chattra Dal activists, and demanded arrest of the attackers.

Speakers at the rally alleged that at least 70 activists of the ruling party's student front, led by its district president Akhtaruzzaman Jewel, ransacked the house and beat three caretakers-- Zia, Moinul and Alam. Abedin and his family are in Dhaka.

They said the house was attacked after a rumour spread in the town that JP supported Saturday's countrywide hartal called by Awami League.

District JP leaders including its convenor Samir Uddin, Shahjahan Chowdhury and central organising secretary Jatiyo Sramik Party Bazlar Rahman addressed the rally.

But Jewel denied the allegation.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders including its Nilphamari town unit president Aziz Ahamed, general secretary Zahurul Islam and Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal President Abdur Rahman Prodhan in a join statement denied that Chhatra Dal activists had attacked Abedin's house.

BNP and JP have filed cases accusing each other for Friday's incident.

Police is guarding Abedin's house and the district JP office.
