Rangamati fire kills one, injures 15
230 houses, shops gutted: 115 families homeless


An elderly man was killed and 15 others injured in a devastating fire that also gutted 230 dwellings and shop at a market in remote Rajostholi upazila in the district in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

The dead was identified as Shadhon Chandra Kormoker, 50, a blacksmith. The injured, most of them children, were being treated at the upazila health complex, police said.

About 115 families have become homeless as the fire gutted their houses, police said. Property and goods worth about Tk 2 crore were gutted in the incident.

The fire that broke out at around 12:30 at night raged for about three hours, police said. Its origin could not be known.

Fire brigade from Kaptai could not reach the spot in time because it is in a remote area and a river has to be crossed through ferry, official sources said.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Dr Jabar Ahmed Khan and army officials from the district headquarters visits the spot yesterday.
