Close shave for Tigers

Habibul Bashar celebrated his captaincy with a fine half-century as Bangladesh recorded a tense six-run win over Namibia in the first limited-overs practice match in Windhoek yesterday.

The top-order of the Tigers hit scoring form except opener Shahriar Hossain who scored 16 when Bangladesh made an impressive 262 for 7 in stipulated 50 overs against the home team.

Opening batsman Hannan Sarker led the way with 76 while Bashar hit 65 and his deputy Rajin Saleh added 51, according to Bangladesh team manager MA Latif.

Latif was talking to The Daily Star Sport just after the first of the three practice matches ended in the Namibian capital at around 10pm (BST).

It was a tense finish that saw the ICC associate member nation putting up a good fight against their more established opponents.

"They required 18 runs in the last over to win the game and seven of the last ball bowled by paceman Tapash Baishya," said an excited Latif from the ground.

Namibia ended their brave chase at 256-7 in 50 overs. Tapash was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with three wickets. Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique also took three wickets and right-arm paceman Tareq Aziz took one. But Latif could not give details of how the wickets actually fell.

He also said that Mohammad Ashraful, Al-Shahriar and left-arm paceman Monjurul Islam did not feature in Saturday's match.

The Tigers will play their second match at the same venue today.

Bangladesh are making their second visit to Namibia as part of their build up for the tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two Tests and five one-day internationals after spending 15 days in the neighbouring country.

The Test babes won the limited-overs series 4-1 when they last visited Namibia prior to the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.
