Govt policy forces media to gag news of opposition
B Chy tells VCD launch

Former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury yesterday said in many cases the electronic media could not operate independently due to government policies. The government does not like good coverage of opposition news in the media and that's why the electronic media scuttle out opposition news, he added. The former president was speaking at a function organised at his Baridhara office in the city marking the launch of a video CD. His daughter-in-law Lopa Chowdhury and Golam Sarwar Dodul also spoke at the function on behalf of the production house of the video CD. His son Mahi B Chowdhury, MP, was also present. The CD presents national leaders like Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman and MAG Osmani and calls for floating an alternative political platform. Badruddoza, also the founding secretary general of the ruling BNP, said he had to relinquish presidency as the party that voted him to the office asked for it by a majority decision. "I know that was a wrong decision, still I did oblige, as it was a majority decision." About his re-entry into active politics after one and a half years, Badruddoza said he was aspiring to introduce an alternative trend in politics through which he could get close to the people. Asked if he expects the electronic media to air the new CD, the former president said if it is not possible to show the CD in local media he would arrange for its publicity in foreign TV channels. The CD would be released first in the Ekushey Book Fair at Bangla Academy.
