Bangladesh is still free from bird flu, leading poultry scientists said yesterday."So far there is no evidence of bird flu anywhere in the country," said Mohammad Morshed Alam, vice-president of World Poultry Science Association (WPSA), Bangladesh chapter. Speaking at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club, the association leaders said the Department of Livestock and Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute have the technology to identify bird flu virus immediately. As a precaution, the government has also cancelled Eid holidays of poultry experts in the public sector, they mentioned. They hailed the ban on the import of poultry from the countries struck by the disease. Bangladesh should now export chickens to meet the crisis in global market due to bird flu in some countries including Thailand, the world's second largest chicken exporter, they suggested. About a survey being carried out by government departments concerned on the latest situation in poultry sector, Morshed Alam said the survey report will be available within a week. Reports received so far say the situation is good, he added. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide financial and technical support to face any situation in poultry sector, Alam mentioned. On the death of chickens at same Savar poultry farms recently, he said it was an isolated incident caused by wrong vaccination. Association leaders who spoke at the press conference included MA Salek, vice-president, ATM Alamgir, treasurer, and Rafiqul Huq and Kamal Ahmed, members.
