"Denouement in Iraq"
4th year, Economics, Dhaka University
This is in reference to the letter by Molla Mohammad Shaheen, written on 20th December 2003. He opines, " Saddam's nabbing heralds a new era for Iraq. He was a despot: he emulated Pol pot and democratisation will be strengthened by the direct support from US, UK and so on."Molla Sahab, your candid words seem a pie in the sky to me, because: -Saddam's nabbing does not herald a new era, rather the US wants common Iraqis in the firing line. If Saddam is culpable for killing his opponents, then Bush is not less culpable for killing innocent lives. Occupying a sovereign state bodies ill for the world. -Saddam was a real despot. But there are many despots in present day world. If he is deposed, then others should also be deposed. He never emulates Pol Pot since Pol Pot killed more than half a million people. He just kills and drives the opponents while Pol pot kills innocent people indiscriminately. -Democratisation in Iraq? The US-UK does not really care a hoot about democratisation. They just play a snake and cadre game with the victim. If Iraq is invaded to be democratised, then USA should invade a host of countries like Pakistan or whole of Middle East except Iran and Israel. If USA favours democracy, it should like Iran since its democracy is deeply entrenched in comparison with other middle eastern countries. But reality is known to all. In passing, USA invaded Iraq simply because Israel compelled US to do so: nothing else.
