Hitzfeld happy where he is
BBC, London
Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld insists he has no intention of becoming England coach. Hitzfeld has been tipped as a possible successor if Sven-Goran Eriksson resigns after the European Championship finals in Portugal. But the German coach said: "No one has asked me about the job and it doesn't interest me much at the moment." Hitzfeld has a contract with Bayern Munich until 2005 and insists he intends to see the deal through. Eriksson has continually been linked with a return to club football with Chelsea after the Euro 2004 campaign. And those rumours have led to claims that the Football Association is considering lining Hitzfeld up as a summer replacement. But the German coach told the Munich daily Tz: "I have no idea what all this means. "I want to fulfill my contract with Bayern Munich until 2005." Hitzfeld, with 15 titles, is one of Europe's most respected coaches and has said he is routinely contacted every time a major job opens up on the continent. Hitzfeld is the only coach besides Austria's Ernst Happel to win the European Cup with two different sides, claiming the trophy in 1997 with Borussia Dortmund and in 2001 with the Bayern. He came in for criticism as Bayern Munich struggled in the early stages of the Bundesliga season and struggled to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. But Bayern eventually won through to the last 16 and have climbed to second in the Bundesliga as they seek a fifth title in six seasons. Hitzfeld has expressed an interest in taking over as Germany coach at some stage in his career.
