Manjarul, Jamal shine in loss

Lower order batsmen Manjarul Islam Rana and Jamal Uddin smashed half centuries to restore some pride but Bangladesh A still crashed to a 10-wicket defeat to Pakistan WAPDA on the last day of their Patron's Trophy match at the UBL ground in Karachi yesterday.It was the tourists' second consecutive defeat in the four-day games. Bangladesh A drew with Defence Housing Authority (DHA) in their first match and lost to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) in the second. Left-hander Manjarul made a sparkling 84 while Jamaluddin scored exactly fifty to take the A side to a respectable 337 in the second innings. But that left the home team with only two for victory and WAPDA got there off the first ball of Alamgir Kabir which went for four byes. But the efforts of the number seven Jamal and number nine Manjarul was the highlight of the day which began with their side teetering on 183 for six and in need of another 153 runs to make the opponents bat for a second time. Manjarul belted eleven boundaries and an over boundary in his 96-ball innings while Jamal's 50 came from 123 deliveries. Naved-ul-Hasan was the most successful WAPDA bowler with four for 95 while Aqeel Ahmed took three for 89. Test opener Hannan Sarker, who led the A side, returns home along with eight of his colleagues Mohammad Ashraful, Rajin Saleh, Manjarul, Tarek Aziz Khan, Anwar Hossain Monir, Shahriar Hossain, Ehsanul Haque and Mohammad Salim -- today to join the national team's camp for the tour of Zimbabwe which begins on January 4. Their replacements Tushar Imran, Humayun Kabir, Rashedul Haque, Anwar Hossain, Halim Shah, Fahim Muntasir, Monjurul Islam, Nasiruddin Faruque, Gazi Alamgir and Ashraful Haque-- left for Karachi last night. Middle-order batsman Imran will take over captaincy for the remainder of the A side's campaign. His first test comes up against a formidable PIA on January 4 at the Quaid-e-Azam Stadium.
