An electric short circuit ignited the flames at a Bata shoe shop in Shah Ali Plaza that burned down most leather goods and other accessories at about 11:35pm, a fire brigade official said.

However, the blaze could not spread as the shop was closed, he added.

Faruq Hossain, a firefighter, was hurt while dousing the flames.

Nine fire-fighting units from the headquarters, Mirpur and Mohammadpur tamed the flames at about 1:55am, sources said.
