8 JCD cadres in Sylhet jailed for assaulting army officer


The Court of Speedy Trial, Sylhet yesterday sentenced a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activist to five years in prison while each of his seven associates were given three years term for assaulting an army officer at Barudkhana in Sylhet.

Magistrate Shoaib Ahmed Khan jailed Ahmed Habib Ibne Islam alias Chamak to five years in jail and fined him Tk 5,000 for misbehaving with Second Lieutenant Jubayer.

Saiduzzaman Lavlu, Ahmed Hakim Khan, Mubinul Haq Chowdhury Rahi, Aminul Islam Pamel, Junel Ahmed, Lipu Banik and Dibya Roy were each sentenced to three years in prison and fined Tk 3,000 in the same case.

On November 7, 2003, a gang led by JCD cadre Chamak swooped on Jubayer and some of his friends after a heated debate over honking of horns. Chamak also brandished a pistol at the army officer.
