'Focus child rights issues in print, electronic media'
STAFF CORRESPONDENT
More attention is needed to focus child rights issues in print and electronic media, said the speakers at a workshop in the city yesterday. They said due to lack of proper focus, child rights are still violated throughout the country in many ways. The Center for Development Communication (CDC) has organised the workshop on child rights issues for the reporters. The three-day training workshop is being participated by reporters of national and regional dailies at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB). A research paper titled 'Child rights news published in newspapers: an evaluation' was presented at the workshop by Arafat Ara, a researcher. It was based on the stories published in two national and some regional dailies in three months. The paper showed that most of the newspapers published surface reports on child rights issues instead of in-depth news. Dr Gitiara Nasrin of mass communication and journalism department of Dhaka University said the country's newspapers are not dealing with the issue properly. "The newspapers still use some objectionable words while writing stories on the violation of child rights and these should be changed", she added. Muhammad Jahangir, who moderated the workshop, suggested that the children should be allowed to express their problems in newspaper at least once in a week. Mozammel Hossain, deputy editor of the Prothom Alo, said to protect child rights we have to develop interest among the elders by reporting on the issue. Kazi Nabiul Haq of Plan International and Sharfuddin Khan of International Labour Organisation also spoke.
