One killed, cop abducted in Rangamati

A young man was shot and four others including a police constable were abducted in conflicts between pro- and anti-peace pact outfits in remote villages in Rangamati district on Thursday and Friday, police said.They said anti-pact activist Bhaggyadhan Chakma, 15, suffered bullet injuries when 15 to 17 pro-pact operatives swooped on Khamarpara village in Naniarchar upazila early Friday. Bhaggyadhan was admitted to the local upazila health complex and later shifted to Rangamati General Hospital from where he fled to escape arrest. Bonnya Chakma, 45, a villager, was also kidnapped during the clash. In a separate incident, the anti-peace group stormed Betchhari village in Kawkhali upazila on Thursday and kidnapped three people and torched four houses. Those kidnapped are police constable Bijoy Shankar Chakma, 25, Jyoti Bikash Chakma, 35 and Juluikhya Chakma, 32. Bijoy was at his village home on leave. Some sources claimed that the abducted persons were released at Bakchhori yesterday. The Peace Agreement on Chittagong Hill Tracts, signed between the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) and the past Awami League government on December 2, 1997, brought an end to decades of bush war in the region. In the wake of the peace deal, violence between PCJSS and its rival the United People's Democratic Front has been raging in the hilly terrain.
