142 including 41 children killed in May


One hundred and forty-two people including 41 children were killed through the violation of human rights across the country last month.

Odhikar, a human rights organisation, also said in its monthly report that 31 women were killed over dowry. Four women committed suicide while 10 including three men were tortured in dowry-related incidents.

One hundred and forty-nine women and children were raped, 14 of them were killed thereafter. Besides, 32 became victims of acid-throwing, an Odhikar monthly report, based on newspaper reports, said.

One hundred and eighty-three children were tortured. Of them, 57 were violated, 25 injured and 12 committed suicide. Besides, five children were trafficked, 37 kidnapped, three missing and three acid-burnt.

On the political front, 46 people were killed, 466 injured and 132 arrested.

Press people were also not spared in May as three journalists were injured, five arrested and one assaulted. Seven journalists received threat, and cases were filed against nine others, the Odhikar report added.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts has also had its share of unrest. Five were killed, 14 abducted, four injured, one arrested and seven missing in the last month.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) said in its report, six people were killed and 115 injured in 48 torture incidents by police and other law-enforcers in one month.

A report of the Democracywatch on the other hand said 137 people were killed in 267 incidents of dacoity, the clash over land or property and hijacking in May.
